Cypress Lawn Feature: Magnificent glass work in the early ceilings at the Mausoleum catacombs. Completed during the first decade of the twentieth century, the building itself was designed by Bernard J.S. Cahill, a prominent California architect, with a fondness for natural lighting. All the illumination in the room comes from the sun penetrating the stained glass ceiling. It was crafted by the United Glass Company of San Francisco, owned by Harry and Bert Hopps, whose stained glass mastery also adorned San Francisco’s Olympic Club, Palace Hotel, and the old City of Paris department store (now Neiman-Marcus). These ceilings can be viewed in our stained glass tour at Cypress Lawn titled Splendor in the Glass. The richness, or “fire,” of the colors, especially the reds, cannot be produced today. It is a natural treasure, right in our backyard. Has anyone else out there viewed this ceiling?
