Cyprian Blamires writes: For a long time now, voices have been raised to lament the alleged failure of the Church fully to implement Vatican II. I make no comment on the correctness or otherwise of this suggestion. I simply note that one of the subjects of complaint has been the seeming absence of the collegiality encouraged by the Council. In other words, the beef is that the Holy Father doesnt consult with the Bishops enough. The subtext here is the idea that of course, if the Bishops were to be consulted more by the Holy Father and decisions taken in common, then innovative and progressive and exciting changes could be made, changes supposedly being stifled by an excessively authoritarian Holy See. Well then, we have just had the recent Synod of Bishops, a perfect instance of collegiality. But if the media reports are to be believed (and a massive caveat is required there of course), it seems that the shoe is on the other foot. It is the Bishops who are wanting to put the brake on, in the face of a Pope portrayed as innovative and progressive. So collegiality hasnt quite had the effect anticipated in some quarters ..... No doubt some will now be saying we have the wrong kind of bishop!!!! Oh! So it wasnt the lack of collegiality after all that was the problem?
