Event: Hike up to the top of West Rock State Park via Boy Scott trail (followed by pizza at Ernies, which in many ways is as good or better than the more famous pizzerias six miles to the south) When: Sunday, Oct 12th @ 1:00 PM Where to meet: The parking lot of the historic Darling House Museum - 1907 Litchfield Turnpike (Diagonally across from Clark Road) Length of hike: Approx. 3.5 miles round trip. Conditions: The first portion is very easy. The final ascent is a bit tricky, but beautiful. Wear sneakers with good treads or hiking boots. Bring water. If you bring a jacket, sweater or tee shirt, you will end up carrying it. What you will see: The historic Darling house and barn built in 1772 Farm fields still in use from the eighteenth century The scenic West River and wooden crossing bridge Glacial drumlin fields and erratic boulders left in place over 12,000 years ago Stone walls constructed by the original settlers The prime hunting grounds of the Quinnipiac tribe The picturesque Lake Dawson and its earthen dam and spillways The basaltic cliff faces of West Rock formed by the cooling of molten lava over 170 million years ago Hawks, owls, vultures and occasional eagles Scenic autumn vistas for miles in multiple directions
