DAILY CELEBRATION OF CHRIST, Thursday, November 20, 2014 Gospel Reading: Luke 19:41-44 Celebration of Christ: Jesus, the Prince of peace and the lover of peace Our Lord Jesus Christ is the Prince of peace and the promoter of peace. He knows the importance of peace. He knows that the world cannot exist without peace. He knows the consequence of lack of peace. The worst situation one can find himself is to live without peace. It is another form of hell. This was the state where Jesus found Jerusalem that moved him to tears. In the gospel of Luke 19:41-44, when Jesus drew near and saw the city he wept over it, saying, “Would that even today you knew the things that make for peace!” but now they are hidden from your eyes.” How I wish the Nigerians, the Africans and even the world at large would know the importance of peace they will not be making the kind of political utterances they are making that has taken the lives of so many innocent people. When Jesus saw the ugly situation of things in Jerusalem he predicts an inevitable war. According to him, “For the days shall come upon you, when your enemies will dash you to the ground, you and your children within you, and they will not leave one stone upon another in you; because you did not know the time of your visitation.” This was exactly what happened shortly after the death and resurrection of Christ. Precisely in 70 AD Jerusalem was destroyed by the Romans. Since then only God knows how many nations have leant their lesson. They still do not know the importance of peace. If our generation knows the importance of peace, there will be no boko harram or other forms of terrorism, there will be no kidnappings here and there. If they know the importance of peace politicians will not be attacking themselves verbally. They will not be ringing election and they will not be denying employment and admission to the youths because these are the very things that can easily lead to war. But who cares? The best gift our Lord Jesus Christ offered to his followers was the gift of peace. He told his disciples, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (John 14:27). Child of God, you need this peace. Our nations cannot do without the peace of Christ. And so, may the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you now and forever – Amen!
