DAREBIN MUSIC FEAST AT FAROUK’S OLIVE is starting this week and it is going to be exciting! Improv, Folk and bush poetry, spicy Ethno-Jazz, not so standard Jazz standards, head spinning ears ringing Balkan trad mayhem, enthusiastic trad Jazz with humor and more eastern European odd rhythm let your feet tell the story stuff...Oh Darebin Music Feast- we love you. WEEK 1 Thursday 9/10/14 - Sunday 12/10/14 All improv - All in on Thursday, 9/10/14 at 8.30pm: All improv, all welcome… Please come and join some of the finest improvisers. Play a few notes or just kick back and enjoy the ride… So far it has been an amazing journey! Anna Smyrk and the Appetites on Friday, 10/10/14 at 5pm: Anna Smyrk is a bird of many feathers; she writes and sings contemporary folk tunes, sets old bush poetry to song and delights in ‘chanson francaise’. Join her for her last Melbourne show for the year before she jets of for a European tour. Samassin on Friday, 10/10/14 at 8pm: Samassin are a world fusion quintet specialising in spicy, original Ethno-Jazz compositions; fused with ancient rhythms and classical flavour. Energetic Balkan tunes and Arabic compositions are uniquely interpreted. Samassin will record their first album in 2014 and commence a European tour 2015. George Borthwick Trio with Tim Willis on Saturday, 11/10/14 at 5pm: The George Borthwick Trio present a Saturday afternoon-early evening show of jazz standards as part of the Darebin Music Feast. Having played at Farouk’s Olive regularly since May, the trio perform their favourite jazz charts with new interpretations. $3 entry at the door, all ages welcome. Balkanika on Saturday, 11/10/14 at 8pm: As a foreplay to Opa!, Balkanika will seduce you with most beautifully played traditional authentic Balkan tunes... Opa! on Saturday, 11/10/14 at 9 pm: Opa! The one and only Balkan Brass Beast in Australia at Farouk’s Olive for a brasstastish Darebin Music Feast Show. Inspired by the World’s biggest music festival, the Sabor Trubaca in Guca, Serbia, Opa Bato! play authentic Balkan brass and originals. It’s music to dance, drink and be merry to. This show wants to make you smile! Here we go again! on Sunday, 12/10/14 at 5pm: Here We Go Again! features six musicians, performing a wide range of traditional jazz and standard tunes with enthusiasm and humour! Brett Willis (reeds), Andrew Stephens (banjo), Bill Thomson (drums), Rod Neil (Leader/trombone), Jaz Stutley (vocals/kazobo) plus Tony Bassiliadis (sousaphone). Balkanika on Sunday, 12/10/14 at 8pm: Traditional Balkan Folk Music has a long history of continuous evolution with influences from areas with vastly differing conceptions of music; European and Oriental being amongst the most prominent. This gives it a unique sound of its own which Balkanika faithfully reproduces beautifully. DRINKS OF THE WEEK Samassini: Vanilla infused Slivovic (for the Balkan influenced tunes), Rose infused Rum (for the Middle Eastern influenced tunes) and Honey syrup (for the sweet compositions of Kirsty) - a magical potion to suit their magical music. George, Seb and Okkey Dokey: Pinot Gris, Honey infused Gin, Lime and Soda. Refreshing just like their jazz vibe. Cherry-Choc Balkanika shot: A sweet and delicious shot with a bit of bite. Our tribute to Balkanika - one of our favourite bands. Opatini: Slivovic (of course), Maraschino and Orange will make you dance, dance and dance the night away. We love Opa! and we promise you’ll love their drink.
