DASSEN EILAND REPORT: 31st May 2014 Got up at 5 am Saturday morning just to let jock out for a pee, I wandered a bit further out onto the balcony and was astonished to notice a thickish fog, a few stars and heard just a little surf slapping the Melkbos beach, now that was not what all and sundries predicted. It was doom and gloom from Friday and all hell was going to break loose. Well my balcony did me well again ! Wind Guru se ......... The flask was charged, left-over braai meat packed and off I went. At Yzerfontein harbour I had to wait for a while for a little light to see if it was really the case that it was so perfect. No wind, no swell in fact only 2 m surge up the slip. The fog however was a pea soup of note, totally unpredicted. I set my new flashy Garmin GPS with a straight red line to the Kalkoond and away I sped. At the Island I had to use my split screen to hug the coast and see whats below as that fog was very thick. At the dop I released 2 rapalas and within a short time I had 2 tail and 2 snoek all on the Mark 2 storm. As for the seals, none to be seen or maybe they could not see me and me not them or maybe the storm earlier the week sent them back to Vondeling Eiland. By 11.30 the fog lifted as a slight NW picked up and snoek were now taking my rapalas before I even got going, there were masses of them, even saw a few snoek, not breech but jump out the water a meter high in a feeding frenzy. Over towards the South point more towards swartklip I spotted birds in their masses at least 5 groups diving and splashing with mass hysteria. There after it was one cast one tail as long as its spot on into the birds. Two tail on the ..........spinner then switched to the ppp and what fun I had playing those mothers in with my newly acquired light rod and reel. Round about 1.30 I had my 10 tail and sadly had to return my snoek to the sea. I eventually found 2 seals who could not believe their luck as a couple of snoek came from the heavens. Whether they ate it or not I will never know. I had quota and the NW was now picking up to about 15 knots so it was home James and the horses were not spared all 80 of them. While I was sitting in a filthy lay-by on the R27 having my still piping hot German brew coffee and my left over sticky braaid chicken I could not believe what actually took place that morning, it was totally unexpected and unpredicted. I placed Saturday at the top of my best fishing days ever. Apart from the fog it was a near perfect day, bearing in mind that I was on the leeward side of the Island. The trip back was a little bumpy but who cared, the adrenalin was still pumping and the music blaring to the sound of He aint heavy hes my brother.......wow what a blessing !!! I believe the wind was pumping at about 3 pm but not unmanageable, by then I was washing and packing my prize catch over a cold Stella stinking like a camels armpit (according to Careen) Two fresh tail were sacrificed over the coals on Sunday for a Family reunion and some wine was spilled. Good to be alive, smell the roses and see the detail in colour. Long live....long live Have a blessed and profitable week !
