COMPANY OF FOLK is recommended for a $23,000 grant to support the traveling exhibit From Generation to Generation. From Generation to Generation is a traveling exhibit that celebrates folk and ethnic art throughout the State of Illinois. The exhibit travels to underserved areas of the State showing exhibit panels of ethnic and folk artists from all over the State. The exhibit is presented in a public forum for 3 months and includes public programming featuring artists (material culture and musicians) celebrated in the exhibit. Each exhibit site also chooses one artist from its area to be represented on a panel in the traveling exhibit. NEA Chairman Jane Chu said, Im pleased to be able to share the news of our support through Art Works including the award to COMPANY OF FOLK. The arts foster value, connection, creativity and innovation for the American people and these recommended grants demonstrate those attributes and affirm that the arts are part of our everyday lives. COMPANY OF FOLK Director of Folklife Programs Lisa Rathje says: From Generation to Generation highlights significant and beautiful traditional art that exists in a diversity of communities and homes across the state of Illinois. Telling the stories of Illinois artists, the featured art forms represent a wide variety of traditions such as duck decoy carving, Mexican folk dancing, Japanese Taiko drumming, Irish fiddle, Mexican murals, Pysanka, and African American Quilts. Every artist is part of a larger tradition, and their stories prompt questions that ask all of us to consider What will I pass along? Art Works grants support the creation of art, public engagement with art, lifelong learning in the arts, and enhancement of the livability of communities through the arts. The NEA received 1,474 eligible applications under the Art Works category, requesting more than $75 million in funding. Of those applications, 919 are recommended for grants for a total of $26.6 million.
