DAY 246 – TELL THE LORD ------------------------------ “LORD, he whom you love is sick.” – John 11:3 In most cases the sickness of the LORD’s loved ones is for the benefit of other believers. Lazarus was permitted to be sick and to die, so that by his resurrection the apostles of the day might benefit. His sickness was indeed for the glory of God. Throughout all these thousands of years since Lazarus’ sickness, all believers have been getting good out of it. The church and the world may receive tremendous advantage through the sorrows and sufferings of good men. The negligent may be awakened, the doubters may be convinced, the ungodly may be converted, those in pain may be comforted through the testimony of others who have been in sickness. If that be the case, why would we wish to avoid sickness? Don’t you wish that your friends should say about you also, “LORD, he whom you love is sick”? It is important to keep constant communication with the LORD about everything that happens to us and around us. The LORD Jesus knows all about us, but it is necessary and it brings great relief to pour our hearts to him. When John the Baptist’s disciples saw their leader beheaded, they took his body, and went and told Jesus. They could not have done better. In all your troubles send a message to Jesus, and do not keep your miseries to yourself. There is no need to be reserved about your situation and condition – since you should not worry about him treating you with pride, being heartless or being cruel. Jesus will never betray you, and he is a friend who will never refuse you. You may be sure that if you tell the LORD Jesus, he will support you in your trouble or problem. If you go to Jesus and ask him why you are sick, he may be pleased to show you why. Even if he does not tell you, he will make you willing to bear his will with patience without knowing why. He can bring the truth to your mind or cheer you up, or strengthen your heart by his presence and give you his glory in your afflictions. Remember that Jesus may also give healing. Healing for both body and soul must be sought from the LORD. Yes, we do make use of medicines, but these can do nothing apart from the LORD, “who heals all our diseases.” We may tell Jesus about our aches, pains and coughs. Some persons are afraid to go to God about their health. They pray for the forgiveness of sin, but will not dare ask the LORD to remove a headache. Surely, if the very hairs on our heads are all numbered by God, it should not be so difficult for him to deal with pressures inside the head. Our big things must be very little to the great God, and our little things cannot be much less. This is a proof of the greatness of the mind of God that while he rules the heavens, the earth and the entire universe, he is not so busy with these that he forgets about the least pain and needs of any one of his poor children. We may go to him about our failing breath, because he first gave us lungs and life. We may tell him about the eye which grows dim, and the ear which loses hearing – for he made them all. We may mention the swollen knee, the stiff neck, and the sprained foot, since he made all our members, he redeemed them all and he will raise them all from the grave for eternity.
