DAY 4) HOW TO SEND A DEMO TO LABELS Before sending your music to labels you should make sure that your productions are on a suitable level yet. First you should ask some of your friends to listen and give you an honest opinion about it. Whenever they say that it´s reeeaally cool, make also sure that your favorite label is releasing that kind of music. Notice that most of the labels have a „demo policy“. This means they want you either to send a download/private soundcloud link by email, upload it to a Dropbox server or do it the oldschool-way: send it by post. Finding this demo policy is easy: just ask google or check the social media pages of the label. When you send a SoundCloud-link: please make sure that the track was not public before and don´t has too much plays yet. My experience tells me when I open a track with 50 plays yet, my first thoughts are „okay, 50 labels before me didn´t like that track!“. Sending a demo is like sending a love letter and not bringing your garbage to the container. You don´t send a love letter by e-mail to 10 girls in CC, so do the same with a demo: find a personal contact to the label owner/A&R and write down something inspiring. Don´t send a „Hello labels“ mass mail. Trust me: your mail will be deleted much faster than you spent time writing it. If you don´t have a personal contact to the label yet, tell them something about you but don´t write a book. Major labels often gets a mass of demos every day, so try to find some special words. Your demo has to be unique and exclusive! After sending your music please be patient for some days or maybe some weeks. I often had it in the past that an artist sends an annoying mail „Did you hear it yet???“ after a few hours. That´s another No-Go.
