DEBACLE AT HANOVER JUNCTION.—During the days leading up to the Battle of Gettysburg, Union and Confederate forces skirmished at crossroads villages in the Keystone State. One such event occurred at Hanover Junction, and the 150th anniversary of the brief engagement is tomorrow. Capt. Edwin Likens of the Twentieth Pennsylvania Volunteer Militia was there, and I published his profile last year. An excerpt: "A battalion of veteran Confederate cavalry from Virginia and Maryland rode along the pristine Pennsylvania countryside on the morning of Saturday, June 27, 1863. Roughly 200 sabers strong, it advanced towards Hanover Junction, a part of the intricate rail and telegraph network that linked Baltimore and Washington with the Union. Meanwhile, an equal number of hastily recruited militiamen prepared to meet them. The soldiers belonged to the Twentieth Pennsylvania Volunteer Militia, which had been organized ten days earlier as Confederates forces poured across the Keystone State border."
