DECEMBER 18, 2014 Tears and Rainbows I’ve experienced it a handful of times myself, once fairly recently – the sight of perhaps the smallest of all possible rainbows – that which appears immediately in front of one’s own eye as the sun hits a tear that is stretched between the upper and lower eyelashes. Perhaps you’ve experienced it too. I presume Scottish preacher and hymn writer, George Matheson, must have, for he once wrote a prayer about it. As you read his words below, bear in mind that Matheson became totally blind at the age of 20…before entering seminary…before writing these words: “My God, I have never thanked Thee for my thorn! I have thanked Thee a thousand times for my roses, but never once for my thorn. Teach me the glory of the cross I bear. Teach me the value of my thorns. Show me that I have climbed to Thee by the path of pain. Show me that my tears have made my rainbow.” Is it possible to come to the place of such surrender that we actually thank God for the thorns, the crosses we bear, and the path of pain we must occasionally walk? Another songwriter asks, “When does the thorn become a blessing? When does the pain become a friend? When does my weakness make me stronger? When does my faith make be whole again? I want to feel His arms around me in the middle of the raging storm – so that I can see the blessing in the thorn.” There is no escaping the thorns of this world, and we each will also carry our own cross. But as the inevitable pain produces tears, may we look toward the Light and see the promise of our tear’s rainbow. There is always a purpose in the pain He allows. Our tears will make our rainbow. –Dave “Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this (thorn), that it should leave me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
