NORTHERN TRADERS TO UNDERGO SCREENING IN IMO All traders from the North operating in Imo State are to undergo thorough screening by the state government to ensure their proper identity, the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Northern Affairs, Faisal Lawal, told Daily Trust in Owerri yesterday. He said the screening being conducted through his office has already started with the aim of identifying every northerner trading in the state, adding that it also affects those engaged as security guards in all parts of the state. The screening according to the governor’s special assistant is in line with a recent declaration by the state governor tagged: “Know Your Neighbour”, following the recent discovery of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at a church in Owerri. He said elements of the screening include the name of the person, his state of origin, type of trade, endorsement by his chairman and trading location, adding that at the end, an identity card bearing the person’s passport and signature of the chairman of the trading association and the Sarki would be issued for proper identification. He assured that at the end of the exercise, every northern trader would be fully documented. He recalled the recent warning to northern traders by Governor Rochas Okorocha to stop entering the state with their goods at night. Lawal said many northern traders have lived in Owerri for the past 100 years, assuring that every northerner in the state should have a business and not to terrorize people.
