DECLARATION SPEECH ANALYSIS: 1. SETTLING THE DIVISIVE ISSUES (From paragraph 3) Few enemies of progress have raised divisive issues of age and religion in this gubernatorial contest. I am 46 years old and I am proud to note that great leaders like Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Bola Ige and Dr. Omololu Olunloyo became governors of this our great state about my age.... I am however glad to say that incompetence has nothing to do with whether you are young or old, whether you are a Muslim, a Christian or a traditional practitioner, Service delivery is the key to the hearts of our people Engr Seyi Makinde in his characteristic blunt diplomacy has told the whole world that performance has nothing to do with age and hes not riding on that platform with people like me. However, as much as he made that point clear, he also maintained that those claiming hes too young to rule Oyo state are only being mischievous; with relevant examples from past rulers of the state and globally. We must then face the facts and forget about demographic divisions as excuses for denial. Meanwhile, since we cant contest his youthful energy and visionary tendencies, his age should be treated as advantage and not otherwise. In the last 24 hours, I have had to defend Engr Seyi Makindes religion thrice (thank God its defense and not denial like Peter did to Jesus. lol). Hes from Anglican background and now member of the Redeemed Christian Church of God. He doesnt believe ones religion has anything to do with performance in public office and the masses dont care about the religion of the leader that make their lives better and put food on their tables. You cant get his special attention by assuring of support because he belongs to your denomination or religion; he sees religion as personal between God and man and exemplified in how well you relate with your neighbours. He doesnt need to pretend to be any religion and hes never desperate for anything. The Redeemed band on his hand is to profess his faith without losing his friendship with people of other religions, who incidentally are more in politics than his. Without mincing words, majority of his loyalists and supporters are Muslims and have remained faithful to his course for ages. He has made it known to the whole world that picking the ticket/winning election and performance in office has nothing to do with ones faith/religion. Ladies and gentlemen, great people of Oyo state; Service is the key to the heart of our people and that is what Engr Seyi Makinde is prepared to offer. Hes not saying its going to be easy but its attainable with teamwork. What a way to settle the divisive issues of age and religion and put the myopic enemies in their place without being offensive. All those peddling rumours about his Islamic religion can now see why it doesnt bother him and why his lifestyle of no discrimination has only drawn more people to him, more than anyone I have seen. His Christianity in the midst of political wolves has challenged me more than any other person that professes to be a Christian in politics.
