DEER Beware - Deer in View. Nearly 70% of all U.S. vehicle accidents involving deer occur from mid-October through mid-December, deer-migrating and mating season. Be SAFE - when you see a deer in your headlights. In the U.S., nearly 70% of all vehicle accidents involving deer occur from mid-October through mid-December—deer-migrating and mating season. Each year in the United States, more than 150 people are killed, and more than 10,000 are injured in motor vehicle accidents involving deer. The deer migration and mating season, along with the hunting season and increased activity in the farming industry keep deer on the move during this period. Deer generally remain in heavily wooded areas during the day and roam open areas at night. Activity often peaks around sunset, twice during the night, and again just before sunrise. Most vehicle accidents that involve deer occur when they are most active, generally from 5:30 AM to 7:30 AM, and from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM. Accidents with deer are often unavoidable, but practicing safe driving is your best defense. Follow these safe driving tips to help you avoid a collision with a deer: · Deer travel in groups, so if you see one, slow down—it is likely that others are nearby. This is especially true in heavily wooded areas or grassy areas on the side of the road. · When driving at night, use your high beams whenever it is safe to do so. This will increase your field of vision, and give you more time to react if you see a deer in the roadway, or on the side of the road. · If a collision is unavoidable, do not swerve. This could cause loss of control and send your vehicle into oncoming traffic or a stationary object. Moreover, the deer might panic and change direction, darting directly into your vehicles path. · Stay alert when traveling on two-lane roads. · Slow down when you see deer crossing signs and always wear your seat belt. · If an accident occurs, never touch a frightened or wounded animal. Move your vehicle off the roadway if possible, and call the police to report the incident. Be SAFE and keeps these tips in mind so you can avoid a collision with a deer.
