DEIR-EL-BERSHA The Coptic village of Deir el-Bersha is located on the east bank of the Nile, south of Hermopolis, todays El-Ashmunein, and on the other side of the Nile than Mallawi. It is part of the governorate of Minya. Deir el-Bersha has been known since ancient times for its limestone quarries. Its necropolis has 39 rock-cut tombs. The necropolis is at the entrance of Wadi Deir el-Nakhla, east of the Nile, and it is hard and difficult to reach. The tombs, because of their structural instability, caused by an ancient earthquake, are closed and only with special authorization, hard to get, you can visit accompanied by a government official. The necropolis was used from the Ancient Kingdom to the Middle Kingdom as the main burial place of Hermopolis. The most important tombs are those of the Nomarchs of the XV Nome, the Nome of the Hare, of Upper Egypt during the XI and XII Dynasty. The limestone quarries and their settlements were in use by the New Kingdom until the Roman period and beyond. The tomb of Djehutihotep is the most popular of the Necropolis of Deir el-Bersha.
