DEPECHE MODE feature in a new book on the History of Basildon This week saw the publication of a new fully illustrated book - BASILDON : THROUGH TIME by Lisa Horner. Having met and talked to Lisa, this book appears to have been a real labour of love. It covers not only the history of the New Town, but refers back to the history of the area well before its inception. Through a series of then & now photos and text it paints a fascinating picture of the development of this unique town; a modern post-war experiment in town planning. Lisa spoke to Basildon : New Town New Life : I was surprised and delighted to be approached by Amberley Publishing who suggested I contact Basildon Borough Heritage Group for the old photographs. The team were happy to oblige and also put me onto a few people who contributed to the book. Through a friend of a friend I came into contact with Tim Williams who told me about the annual BAS Depeche Mode Bus Tour and although I was a fan of Depeche Mode as a teenager I had no idea about the bus tour. Tim provided me with the photograph of Depeche Mode sitting on the embankment opposite Vince Clarkes flat and also the one which had been taken by Robin Woosey where a crowd are queuing outside Raquels night club waiting to see Depeche Mode in November 1981. It has been an intriguing journey making this book, I have felt like a time detective and have met and corresponded with some very interesting people and found out that a place that people find quite ordinary has layers of hidden depth. Id happily do something like this again. - Lisa Horner, November 2014.
