DESERT ROSETTE The ‘desert rose/ rosette’ is a crystal cluster - TopicsExpress

DESERT ROSETTE The ‘desert rose/ rosette’ is a crystal cluster form of gypsum. It is also known as Sand Rose, Rose Rock, Selenite Rose and Gypsum Rose. This form develops when gypsum crystallises in arid sandy conditions e.g. the shallow salt basin. Gypsum is an evaporite mineral of sedimentary deposits associated with halite, anhydrite, sulphur, calcite and dolomite. In Rajasthan gypsum of Quaternary-Recent age occurs in parts of Bikaner, Nagaur, Barmer, Jaisalmer, Pali and Shri Ganganagar districts. It also occurs in Bilara Group of the Marwar Supergroup. The first photo is of the ‘gypsum rosette’ from Lakhasar area, Bikaner district collected and gifted by Mr. Vikram Rai. The selenite crystals I collected from Barmer area during the field study in relation to flooding of three villages in August 2006.
