DESTRUCTIVE REEDS THREATEN LAKE MARGARET HABITAT . . . A St. Thomas man who lives near Lake Margaret is raising the alarm about an invasive plant species he says is growing along the edge of the lake and destroying the ecosystem. Bill Sandison, whose house backs onto Lake Margaret, is concerned about the growth of Phragmites australis (subspecies australis), an invasive perennial grass also known as European common reed. The plant has caused severe damage to wetlands and beaches in Ontario for several decades, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR).
