DETECT is 24/7 and you never know how this skill can be - TopicsExpress

DETECT is 24/7 and you never know how this skill can be used. The principals of PDR/CFD transcend beyond self-defense as I experienced two nights ago. I was having a drink with a friend and while sitting at the bar I noticed a young man and woman were engaging with an elderly man at a nearby table. Their interactions just didnt seem right and my DETECT radar was blaring! My friend noticed that I was staring in their direction and asked what are you looking at? I replied that I thought the elderly man was having difficulty. After about a 20 second lapse, I told him I was going to see what was happening. I walked over asked the couple if I could be of help and they told me their 92 year old father was having trouble breathing. After inquiring about his medical history and learning that he had a heart condition I told the young woman to have the bar call 911 and just as I said that, the elderly man suffered a cardiac event. Once we lowered him to the floor I began to perform CPR. He had stopped breathing and had no detectible pulse. After performing CPR for approximately 4 minutes the elderly man began to respond, his breathing slowly but faintly resumed and I was able to find a consistent pulse. The EMTs arrived and quickly took over applying an EKG, an IV and a respirator. After getting him stabilized they transported him to Stanford Hospital. To my knowledge, he survived and hopefully is resting comfortably with his family. Trusting my instincts. Committing to be a courageous bystander. Taking action. These are the skills I have strengthened by training with Coach Blauer. Yes, I am trained in CPR, a Wilderness Medicine First Responder and a Volunteer Fireman but had I not sharpened my DETECT ability, the outcome for this man might have been much different.
