DETOXING and FASTING: I receive queries on this subject often, especially as I start a detox, like the one Ive been on for the last 10 days and am now slowly coming off of. I thought I would share a few tips as we get closer to the holidays, because this is the time of year when people get excited and panic at the same time. First lets relax. The best part about holidays is cooking and sharing meals with loved ones, eating foods that you might not eat other times of the year. Enjoy, mindfully and then you wont panic. Pace yourself, eat slowly, savor, give yourself breaks, drink lots of water, step away from the table, go walk and breathe fresh air, and if you feel pleasantly full, notice that feeling and put down your fork. There will be plenty of food the next day. The holidays are long, starting with Thanksgiving and the leftovers that seem to go on forever, then Christmas and New Years and the time in between where you visit with family and friends and eat non-stop. Try tasting, rather than eating full servings this year. If you taste everything thats on the table, chances are itll still be more food than you are probably used to eating. Then you can take detoxing, fasting and dieting off your New Years resolution list (usually a big waste of time) and just make a pact with yourself to eat mindfully always. I cant stress enough that detoxing and fasting are not for the purpose of losing unwanted pounds, though that happens. The weight is lost so quickly that it comes back on just as fast, if you havent changed your ways. The last detox I developed in which I cut out sugar in all forms (carbs, fruit included), was very specific to a condition Im happy to report I zapped out of my system. The body changes as one gets older and through this detox I feel different and realize that I dont need certain foods as much as I used to, therefore I will integrate what I learned from it into my lifestyle. When I fast, I do so specifically to give my system a break. There is still plenty to digest without adding more food, so fasting 24 hours for me is a practice that works and is not hard to accomplish at all. The weight comes off as you learn more and more about what your body truly (I mean, truly) needs. Patience is key. If you can develop patience and be where you are, then the weight will come off effortlessly, slowly, sensibly and panic-free.
