DEVOTIONAL - JANUARY 7, 2015 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. ~ Matthew 1:23 A Swiss friend of Voltaire recounts in his personal diary a significant incident in the life of that great French writer of the eighteenth century. A religious procession, carrying the crucifix, wound its way down a Paris street and passed Voltaire and his friend. Voltaire raised his hat. The friend was most surprised, and he exclaimed, What! Are you reconciled with God? Voltaire replied with his characteristic wit and irony, We salute, but we do not speak. Voltaires words are a fitting description of the relationship many sustain with God. They acknowledge Him, for they cannot explain the universe without Him, but they refuse intimate communion. Others believe in the church because it is good for humanity and for society. They enjoy the dignity and beauty of a well - organized church service; but beyond this they do not go. They reject a personal fellowship with God. They salute Him, but they do not speak. Certainly all of us must recognize the existance of God. His handwriting is in the sky, in the secrets of the atom, in mystery and wonder of His Providence. This is good as far as it goes, but it does not go far enough. We must know God in ther person of His Son Jesus. No man knoweth...the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. (Matthew 11:27). The light of the knowledge of the glory of God is seen in the face of Jesus Christ. (2 Corinthians 4:6). We must become acquainted with God and accept Him in Jesus. This acquaintance will change us and provide for all our needs. When we fully understand and enter into this relationship, we will say, Emmanuel...God with us. ~ W.B. Beach
