(DEVOTIONAL TUESDAY #2) – By RuthAnne Henley One With... No two people are ever the same. We are formed with a delightful (and occasionally exasperating) uniqueness. Even identical twins show remarkable differences. This refreshing dissimilarity is part of what makes living beings so fascinating. I thank God for the concept of mass production. Factories, assembly lines and interchangeable parts were strokes of genius. The people who developed those concepts greatly contributed to the equipping of our populace and the raising of the average person out of poverty. But the broad acceptance of the concepts has confused our understanding of what it means to be normal - to be one with each other. Identical is not normal - and the same is not one with. To say that there is no wall of separation between two individuals, no greater or lesser innate value that marks them, is not to say that they are completely alike. It is to honor the structure and nature of each, to celebrate their individual expressions as vital aspects of the whole. You and I are different. Maybe it has something to do with me having Irish roots and your early heritage being Scandinavian, Asian or African. Maybe its our cultural expression, or the fact that I grew up lower middle class and you were reared in abject poverty or extreme wealth. Maybe its gender based. Who knows? Who cares? We are different. Does that mean we cant be one? Being one with has so much less to do with sameness and so much more to do with mutual respect, transparency and celebration. It is time we brought down the walls of unnecessary separation and developed a clear definition of what it means to be truly one with each other. There is a necessary separation from sin. There is a division from the world and slavery to our baser natures. There is no room in Christ for the persistent practice of disobedience to the Law of Love. But all the other walls - all the petty internal sorting - that can and should be swept away. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:28
