DIABETIC KETOACIDOSIS (DKA) Read this and save a life. DKA occurs in diabetic patients or during starvation. It arises due to lack of insulin in the body. Insulin suppreses the release of glycogen from the liver. In DKA, because insulin levels are low, there is increased breakdown of glycogen to form glucose. Hence blood glucose levels increase abnormally. Now, in a process known as osmotic diuresis, excess glucose moves into urine along with water and other solutes. This leads to dehydration and increased urine levels. Patient then experiences dehydration symptoms. Meanwhile the inefficient use of glucose causes free fatty acids to be converted to ketone bodies to produce energy. Ketone bodies are acidic and very poisonous. When their levels increase in the blood, acidosis results. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS: -Thirst -Frequent urinating -Dry lips and skin -Nausea -Vomitting -Tiredness -Difficulty in breathing -Confusion -Abdominal pains It can lead to coma and swelling of the brain. WARNING: Diabetic patients should not starve and MUST always follow their treatment plan. DKA is deadly. Like and share this post
