Ive been seeing lots of buzz about a recent sermon by a very well known preacher. I just listened to the entire sermon, and I have to say that it was such a distortion of Scripture that I am deeply grieved that thousands heard it live and now even more are hearing it after the fact. The preacher began by explaining that there is no word in Hebrew for command, therefore the Ten Commandments are not commands, but promises. Then he explained each commandment by saying, This is what it really says . . . and changing it to a promise. First, Hebrew does have a word for command (verb) and commandment (noun). Of course, he admits that he doesnt know Hebrew but claims a Jewish guy told him this. All he had to do was look it up in a Hebrew-English lexicon. Second, while the Ten Commandments are called the Ten Words in Hebrew, they are described as words that God commanded. Third, each of the commands uses an imperative verb, which by definition is a command. Fourth, his changing the commands to promises (which he did for each of the ten) completely stripped them of their meaning. For example, the command not to murder really says that you dont have to be angry. The command not to steal is a promise that God will provide. For the command against coveting, the preacher says that if it were a command, he would be guilty of breaking it. Now, all of this is to say that we Christians need to be discerning. When you hear a sermon that says Christians have been getting something wrong for centuries, you need to check the facts. And yes, this goes for what I say as well (though hopefully I wont be so arrogant as to think Im the first one to figure something out.) Please dont be deceived, even if the preacher is famous and has a church of thousands.
