Vladmir’s Offering: The items name and theme is a reference to Vlad Dracul III and his fictionalized version, Dracula. Necronomicon: This item is based on a fictional grimoire created by horror author H. P. Lovecraft. The summoning ability of the item is similar to the original books role in summoning the ancient cosmic Old Ones in Lovecrafts Cthulhu Mythos. Aghanim’s Scepter: Aghanims Scepter is named after Agahnim, one of the main villains in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. In both DotA and Dota 2, Rubick is the son of Aghanim. He also possesses an imitation of Aghanims Scepter. Eul’s Scepter of Divinity: The scepters name is a reference to Eul, the creator of the first DotA map back in 2003. Scythe of Vyse: In the original DotA, this item was known as Guinsoos Scythe of Vyse, as a tribute to one of the developers of DotA: Allstars, who went on to co-create League of Legends. Daedelus: Daedalus means clever worker in Ancient Greek and Daedalus is also one of the characters in Ovids Metamorphosis who was a skillful craftsman and artisan. Armlet of Mordiggian: Armlet of Mordiggian is named after Mordiggian, a deity in the Cthulhu Mythos created by Clark Ashton Smith in his story The Charnel God (1934), whose powers consist of sucking away life force and whose cult consists entirely of ghouls. Ring of Aquila: Aquila means eagle in Latin. Mekansm: Mekansm is not an actual word in English, but rather a corruption of the word mechanism, considering its description of how it is made of assorted parts that fit and work together, and its appearance. Monkey King Bar: The Monkey King, Sun Wukong, is the subject of the Chinese folk novel Journey to the West. His weapon, Ruyi Jingu Bang (如意金箍棒), is a magical iron rod with ends banded with gold. Although it weighs several tons, the Monkey King can shrink it at will and tuck it behind his ear. It can also grow at will and duplicate into an infinite number of individual rods, essentially never missing the enemy. Linken’s Sphere: Linkens Sphere is named after Linken, a character from World of Warcraft, who is in turn named after Link, the protagonist of the Legend of Zelda franchise. Shiva’s Guard: The name Shiva is likely a reference to an important deity in Hinduism of the same name, but due to the items ice-themed nature, it may also likely be a reference to Shiva of the Final Fantasy series. Heart of Tarrasque: The name Tarrasque probably references the Tarrasque, an almost undefeatable monster in Dungeons & Dragons. It also bears a resemblance to Tarasque, a dragon that was tamed by Saint Martha in legend and Torrasque, a unique ultralisk from StarCraft. Mjollnir: Mjölnir is the name of Thors Hammer in Norse mythology. Eye of Skadi: Skaði (Skadi) is the Goddess of Winter in Norse mythology. Yasha: Reference to a sword from the game Phantasy Star Online, a Japanese word for supernatural spirits; those akin to demons. Aegis: Aegis was previously an ordinary recipe item that contained three charges. After it was removed, it was then given as a droppable item from Roshan. In Greek mythology, an Aegis that was described as ageless and immortal was presented to Zeus. Demon’s Edge According to the “Are We Heroes Yet?” Comic: When the Mad Moon tore asunder and the Ancients fellto earth, splinters of the Nemesis Stones lay scattered. The demon-smith Abzidian laid claim to two such fragments and from them forged the Demon Edge. Her hilt was Direstone, cunningly carved and her blade a singing shard of Radiant Ore. But once the weapon was complete, he slew himself with the blade, as only a hero may wield it.
