DID YOU KNOW? Cayman Islands Environment Minister Wayne Panton, Chief Officer Dax Basdeo, other staff from the Ministry of Financial Services, Commerce & Environment and DOE staff planted mangrove and seagrape trees today on the CIG property at the GT Barcardere site. This was done in continued recognition and celebration of this years Earth Day! Many thanks to everyone involved. Mangroves provide valuable nursery areas for juvenile fish and crustaceans and are also important source of nutrients for the adjacent marine ecosystem. They provide a source of shelter and food for animals living there. Importantly, mangroves and seagrapes trees help to protect the coastline from serious erosion, especially during storms and where there has been a lot of coastal development in other areas.
