DID YOU KNOW?? On this day in July 26, 1775, the United States Postal Service was established, with Benjamin Franklin being named the first postmaster general. Franklin, who had experience as the postmaster of Philadelphia, put into place an impressive mail delivery system with routes going from Florida to Maine, in addition to service across the Atlantic to Great Britain. Today, the Postal Service is the largest civilian employer in the United States, employing over 700,000 people. These individuals work at more than 40,000 different offices spread out over the entire country, and handle over 212 billion pieces of mail a year. Also, on July 26, 1947, President Harry Truman signed one of the Cold War’s most important pieces of legislature- the National Security Act. This act effectively established the C.I.A, the Department of Defense, the United States Air Force, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the National Security council. All of these new organizations had been consolidated and streamlined from past groups, and all played a major role in the decades long Cold War.
