DISNEYLAND FACT OF THE DAY: For three summers (1965-67) and in June 1959, mermaids splashed around in the submarines lagoon. Originally in 1959, eight attractive local swimmers wearing ocean-themed halter tops and neoprene mermaid tails, were part of the celebratory festivities promoting the new submarine attraction launched in June 1959. Six years later Disneyland officials brought mermaids back to frolic in the Tomorrowland waters and stretch out on the surrounding rocks. The mermaids were a popular feature, but extensive exposure to the lagoons chlorine eventually became a concern. When some male guests felt compelled to jump into the water after the alluring mermaids, park officials whistled everyone out of the pool in 1967.
