DNF - First of all I want to thank you all for the support, the uncountable messages and well-wishes. My race went well so far UNTIL ... ;) . The conditions were finally Hawaii-style like they used to be and I was really happy about that, even though it was not as crazy as in 2004. With the water-conditions a bit tricky after the swell yesterday, swim times were slightly slower, but good for folks that like proper open-water conditions, I managed a 1:04h. The wind on the bike was partly tough, at the same time it wasn´t that slow either because we had some stretches where it was smooth and fast. Then came the run: First 10k were solid in 45min., at 15k I started to feel pretty bad, pulled up all my experiences but didn´t manage to recover and it gradually got worse. I tried to keep it together ... Unlike others I don´t make any excuses or say what I could have done IF .... ;) I simply didn´t have it, I know the reasons and the mistakes I made in preparations and I know when it´s time to pull the plug during the race and I have no issue to DNF if I think it doesn´t bring any other result than wrecking myself. It just didn´t make sense for me to keep pushing myself over the edge. Congrats to all that finished, Sebastian for his couraged race and victory, very well deserved and brave racing, Mirinda Rinny Carfrae for her 3rd title and an amazing run to get that. Congrats to all my friends that raced, especially but not limited to José, Eduardo, Bruno, Guilherme and to Val who finished only 2 months after breaking a vertebrae in a bike-crash. And very specially to Ciça Carvalho who did an amazing race finishing 7th in her age-group. As I am racing Xterra World Championships, Maui,HI recovery started right after and we decided to use the Austrian version of a recovery-drink to toast to the next goal in two weeks :) And now: Massage by my private therapist ;) !
