DOCTOR STRANGE #2 If I werent so painfully aware of being within the Orb, I would swear these were men that Ive known. The Valkyrie and the Surfer of the Eye of Agamotto dont share the aggression of the others assembled. Stephen Strange has fled to the unexpected refuge Agamotto supplies - its a survival thing. The Silver Dagger has killed him. Here in the Eye he can collect and prepare himself (am I sure of that statement?) and continue to function (like unto an autonomous being, or the only real spook in the house or a human bodily downloaded into a living fantasy with muscle and hard edges). Penciler Frank Brunner brings a very keen representational edge to a magical book that flees into other dimensions. Inker Dick Giordano brings his incredible sense of support and supple strength to the pencils, almost exactly like he does with prime example GREEN LANTERN/GREEN ARROW penciler, Neal Adams. At any rate, I, too, am convinced that these are men (that the good Doctor has known). Context is everything, so we know theyre not. Brunners art almost wins the argument, however. Now thats storytelling and delivering. Picking up DOCTOR STRANGE #2 was an eye-opener... Brunner/Giordano gave the cosmic proceedings almost a credibility Id never seen up to then. A bit like Jim Starlin hitting CAPTAIN MARVEL and WARLOCK, despite some of their credible past (such as Roy Thomas/Gil Kane/Dan Adkins on CAPTAIN MARVEL...) At any rate, writer Steve Englehart and the book DOCTOR STRANGE were receiving the drawing required. Note one of the most interesting double-page spreads in the history of mainstream books - and that is no hype, at least from where Im sitting: facebook/photo.php?fbid=417517895970&set=o.158724653421&type=3&theater This tea-party is easy to see as a Marvel-Eye filter of ALICE IN WONDERLAND - or vice versa. Present amongst the highly recognisable Marvel characters such as Spiderman, Nick Fury and Ant-Man are Green Lantern being drunk under the table by Hawkeye and Captain Midnight (from the sleep tonic) having forty winks. And there are the Defenders, Stranges astral body entering the mad catering scene with the Silver Surfer. Englehart and Brunners collaboration was close. The results were one hundred per cent.
