DOG BITE THERMAL – A 5-year-old boy was hospitalized Friday after a he was bitten multiple times by a dog in Thermal, according to Riverside County Animal Services. The incident was reported at about 4 p.m. at a residence in the 88-300 block of Avenue 57, said John Welsh, spokesman for Riverside County Animal Services. The child, who suffered at least two bites, was taken toJohn F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Indio, according to animal services. His immediate condition was not available, but authorities said his injuries were not life-threatening. The boy was playing with other children at the property and had converted a discarded weed-eater box into a costume, complete with eye holes so he could see where he was going in his “boxman outfit,” Welsh said in a news release. The property has several houses within a fenced lot and the dog is normally tethered at the lot, the owner told Animal Control Officer Gerald Duchene, Welsh added. According to Duchene, the dog, a male, 2-year-old German shepherd-Shar Pei mix named Pickett, wandered over to the boy, but when the child took off the costume the dog freaked out, Welsh said. “As soon as the little boy took off that box, the dog charged him,” Duchene said in a news release. “It’s hard to say whether the dog was spooked out when suddenly a child appeared from under the box, but he went after the boy.” The dog’s owner, who was described as being “shaken” by the incident, surrendered the dog to county animal services for humane euthanasia, Welsh said. The owner told officials he didn’t know how the dog had gotten loose.
