DOG PAWS IN WINTER: an interesting read. I would posit that the paws of smaller dogs get colder faster based on my experience. Id also say that size is not the only determining factor. Cole is 23 lbs with beefy, furry paws and likes to hang out just to get fresh air in -30. Chloe is 13 lbs with small, not so furry paws and she can only go out long enough to potty before she begins hopping from one paw to another, or just stopping in the middle of the yard, seemingly unwilling or unable to walk another step. Spencer falls somewhere in between. If we want to walk for longer than 5 minutes, my dogs need boots. I dont think any dog likes to wear boots. They act as if they are totally weirded out by them, until we get out there and going. It does take some training and positive associations, and lots of discouraging them to chew or try to tug them off. But, boots make it possible for us to walk when otherwise wed be stuck in the house all winter. And, as the article mentions, boots can protect from ice balls which can be uncomfortable, even painful, potentially even cut skin in the paw pads. They also offer a level of protection from salt, sand, and de-icing / melting chemicals.
