DONORS DISMAYED WITH KALIATI ATTACKS ON JOYCE BANDA Malawis - TopicsExpress

DONORS DISMAYED WITH KALIATI ATTACKS ON JOYCE BANDA Malawis donors and other key international stakeholders have expressed dismay at remarks made by government minister, Patricia Kaliati, demanding that former President, Joyce Banda, gets permission from President Peter Mutharika every time she leaves the country. Speaking at the sidelines of the United Nations sessions before the General Assembly, Kaliati further told Dr Banda not to travel to where President Mutharika has gone at any particular time. However, impeccable sources say, the diplomatic community moved quick to establish the truth and were left shocked to learn that Kaliati really ushered those words. Top diplomats shared notes as soon as Nyasatimes reported the issue. They contacted Dr Banda to get her side of the story and they realized that she is currently in South Africa handling issues to do with her Joyce Banda Foundation International not in the UK or US as presented by Kaliati, said a source from the British High Commissioners office. The source said the donors have since written Foreign Affairs Ministry to advise on diplomacy more so that Kaliati was speaking while at the United Nations where world and media attention is at the highest. The donors agree that attacking the former Head of State on petty matters send a wrong signal altogether about Malawi when citizens care much about poverty alleviation not political vendetta, said the source. Government is yet to respond to the communication sent by donors and Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Quent Kalichero, refused to comment on the way forward.
