DONT BE A LEGALIST, SON! One dark night in Egypt, a father was standing at the doorway of the house with his son looking curiously at the task being carried out. The father, with a pan half filled with blood in his hand, was lightly painting the doorknob with some of the blood. Dad, the young boy inquired, why are you painting the doorknob with blood? To keep the angel of death away, the father replied. He will pass tonight and kill all the firstborn males of the land. But God said that, if we would put blood on the doorway, we would be spared. But dad, the boy protested, didnt the Lord say to put the blood on the posts and around the doorway? Dont be a legalist, son, the father replied rebukingly. The Lord looks on the heart. He knows my intentions. He saw me kill the lamb. He saw me take the blood. Hes not concerned with those legalistic details. Itll be alright. Dont worry. The young boy grabbed his fathers hand and said, Dad, Im the firstborn. Just for my sake, couldnt you do it the way God said to do it? Now son, the dad replied, I told you to stop being so legalistic. Its not about your actions; its about your heart. The Lord knows the mess the blood would make if I put it all over the doorway. Just putting it here on the doorknob will be fine. God sees my intentions, and thats sufficient. Just before sunset, the boys preoccupation with the mishandling of the blood on the door was too much for him. Quietly, he snuck out the window over to his neighbors house where the blood had been properly, obediently applied. As the night began to pass, the strange and almost deafening silence was pierced by a sudden scream. Then another. Then another. Then another. Death was passing through the land. After a sleepless night, the young boy walked back to his home and was greeted by the sight of his father laid upon the floor…dead. He had neglected to remember that he, himself, was a firstborn male. Because of his willingness to risk everything on the passiveness of God, he sowed seeds of disobedience which grew into a choking and deadly vine of destruction. His son was wise. The father, foolish. God looks at the heart. But a person which claims a pure heart and yet blatantly disobeys God is only deceiving themselves. But Jesus is my Lord, you may protest. But Jesus said: Luke 6:46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? But I love Jesus, you may demand. But Jesus said: John 14:15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. Salvation, in every age, has been exactly the same: God speaks, man hears. Man chooses obedience or disobedience. Obedience results in salvation. Disobedience results in damnation. Think on these things...
