DONT GET SCAMMED! Students, faculty and staff on all three UW campuses have been targets of recent fraud attempts. Callers claim to be law enforcement officers and attempt to intimidate the victims and pressure them into paying alleged fines over the phone, If you get a phone call that is suspicious in nature do the following: · If you are able to identify a phone number, write it down. · Ask the person for a name and (if posing as a police officer) a badge number. · Tell the caller that you know that this is a scam phone call and you are writing down as much info as you are able to extract in order to notify the appropriate authorities. · Call your local law enforcement authorities immediately (for example, King County Sheriff’s Office, UW Bothell Police Department, IRS) after the phone call and report the fraudulent attempts. · Do NOT provide the caller with your personal information. If you do, inform your local law enforcement authorities. · They ARE NOT REAL and will try and scare you to get money.
