Phosphorus is a major essential element for plant growth and development. There are more phosphates in fish effluent than there is nitrogen, but major portions of system (and soil) phosphorus are fixed (“locked up”) in various forms that are not available for plant use (roughly 85% of phosphorous present is un-usable by plants because of the form that it comes in). Phosphorus fixation (lock-up) predominates in both acidic as well as alkaline environments resulting in its low efficiency. The use of phosphate solubilizing microorganisms plays a vital role in solubilizing the insoluble forms of phosphorous thereby making the phosphorous bio-available to our plants. Strains from the genera Pseudonomas, Bacillus, Rhizobium (bacteria), Aspergillus and Cephalosporium (fungi) are among the main phosphate solubilizers.
