DOUBTS OVER NEW DATE FOR ANAMBRA LG Doubts have greeted the recent postponement of local government elections in Anambra State from October 5 to December 14 this year, with stakeholders wondering if the new date would be feasible. Acting chairman of the commission, Mr Sylvester Okonkwo, on Tuesday announced the shifting of date at a meeting with stakeholders and representatives of political parties in Awka. Anambra State commissioner for information, culture and tourism, Chief Joe- Martins Uzodike in a reaction said the postponement was a vindication of Governor Peter Obi’s position that the environment was not conducive for the elections to hold. But the state Labour Party chairman, Sam Oragbunam and coordinator of civil society organizations, Barrister Emmanuel Okechukwu in separate reactions, said there was no possibility that the polls would hold, noting that there was absence of a substantive chairman who should supervise the conduct of the local government elections in the state. They pointed out that ANSIEC was yet to have access to the voter registers compiled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Okechukwu who was a former chairman of Nigeria Bar Association in the state expressed shock that after all the promises by ANSIEC and the APGA-led government that the local government polls would hold, the exercise has once again been shifted. He said Governor Obi never wanted to conduct the local government polls but is only interested in wanting to foist on Anambra State a kangaroo election to create confusion. #Dailytrust .
