DOWN MOBILITY ({Philippians 2:6) I have been teaching Introduction to Sociology for the last 7 years. In the topic social organization, there are two types of mobility; vertical and Horizontal mobility. Human beings especially in the modern Society are very much soaked with the former and especially when it is to do with upward mobility. Upward mobility describes those with a passion for promotion and advancement; those who strive to get to the top of the ladder of their career or vocation/calling. Indeed I read a comment on facbook yesterday, seemingly demeaning a professor who had a diploma college! I was shocked to read this. Especially that it came from a Christian. Nevertheless, I learned that all the world is concerned with is to see at the top. Upward mobility is not only a modern day phenomenon. Interest in personal promotions started in the garden of Eden and with Eve & Adam. Think of the words; And sh saw that the fruit was good for the stomach ..... and for gaining knowledge. She wanted promotion. In todays world, such words as demotion, downsizing or downgrading causes blood pressures in many. In our passage, Christ was engaged in a downward mobility. Jesus Christ was God. He was God of the very God yet he did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited. He never took advantage of his exalted position, he did not exploit it for his own selfish purposes. When he came to us, he never go about showing off or displaying his overwhelming divine power or intimate his followers or enemies with bullying tactics. Christ was very humble. How many Christians and especially leaders, pastors today do we see show off just because of gifts from God? I know of many churches and Christians in Kenya who cannot associated with other Christians. May Christ remind us of his humility today. Let him remind us that we can be on downward mobility yet his divine power.
