DOWN SYNDROME AWARENESS MONTH POST #18 THAT word The r word... Steeped in ugly history and yet used flippantly by so many. There is no context/time/moment when it is ok to use it. If you tell me when you use it that it isnt about my child, it is. The term was used by medical professionals to describe someone with Down syndrome. (In fact even though legislation has changed the term mental retardation to intellectual disability, it is still used today by some in the medical profession). Look at this page, look at my child. How do you think she would feel to hear you say it? It segregates. It only serves to break down all the hard work advocates work so darn hard for. If you use it today, I urge you to stop.
