DPP: Irresponsible to link murder to Dana’s work Tuesday, May 6 2014 Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Roger Gaspard last evening warned any link, unsupported by evidence, being made between the murder of Dana Seetahal SC and her role a prosecutor was “speculative” and “irresponsible”. In a statement, Gaspard first expressed sadness at Seetahal’s murder saying the Office of the DPP “mourns deeply the loss of a dear friend, loyal colleague, astute adversary and an unblenching legal sage”. “There is no accolade too high to describe her,” Gaspard said. Acknowledging the circumstances of Seetahal’s murder last Sunday had evoked great public interest and extensive media coverage, Gaspard said he noted with “disquietude that various commentators are making unfortunate links, unsupported by any evidence, between the death of Ms Seetahal SC and her role as a prosecutor”. “The bases upon which these links are bing made are, at this time, purely conjectural and speculative and to further them would be irresponsible,” he said. Gaspard added the police investigation was still in its “embryonic stage” and it would be “improvident for anyone to arrive at premature conclusions”. He cautioned the media against the publication of any material that would prejudice the fair trial of any sub judice matter, including those in which Seetahal was involved, saying any breach could amount to contempt of court. Gaspard further assured the DPP’s Office would not waiver in the pursuit of justice. “In order to honour the inestimable legacy of Ms Seetahal SC, and to champion the principles she embodied, we, as prosecutors, stand resolute, unbowed, focused and determined to deliver quality service to the criminal justice system, fearlessly,” he said. newsday.co.tt/news/0,194335.html
