DPS would like to thank our First Street Housing residents for your cooperation with todays Drill. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Campus Community, As part of the University’s effort to maintain a Culture of Preparedness, we will be conducting a “Lockdown”/Secure in Place drill Friday (today), in the morning at the First Street Residence Hall. When you receive the notification for the practice “Lockdown”/Secure in Place follow these guidelines: If you are in a lab, classroom, office or meeting room: Lock/barricade yourself in the lab/classroom/office or other securable room. Discuss with others in the room how you would barricade the door (in an actual emergency) at the start of the drill. Do not actually move heavy items during the drill. Close blinds or curtains. Cover any other openings that have a direct line of sight into the room. Move away from windows, doors or other glass areas. Provide assistance when need to individuals with physical disabilities. Hide behind desks, cabinets or other furniture. Turn off all lights. Turn off your cell phone ringer and stay quiet. Do not leave until the police contact you or you receive an All Clear notification on the building speaker/intercom system. All of the UM-Flint buildings have an intercom system. If you are outside of a building when you are notified to lockdown: If it appears safe, run in the opposite direction away from threatening activity. If you are not sure it is safe, run into the nearest building and follow the lockdown instructions. If it does not seem to be safe to run into a building, hide behind a large heavy object, like a vehicle or tree. If you are in your car: Exit the campus if roads are safe. If you are not certain, hide in your car. You will receive a second DPS notification when the practice session has ended. Practice “Lockdown”/Secure in Place drills should last between 10-15 minutes. Note: In the future, if there is an actual “Lockdown”/Secure in Place notification due to an emergency situation, in addition to these guidelines, please follow the direction of the Department of Public Safety and college administrators. Additional information on procedures to follow during emergencies can be found in the UM-Flint Emergency Flip Charts, the Emergency Guideline Posters located throughout the campus and the Emergency Response Plan at umflint.edu/ehs/Emer-Prep-Resp.htm We appreciate your cooperation and, as always, if you should have any questions regarding drills, the Campus Emergency Response Plan or other emergency planning related question, please do not hesitate to call Environment, Health and Safety (766-6763) or the Department of Public Safety (762-3333).
