DR. BOBS DAILY: SHOULD I KNOW WHAT A LAUNDRY POD IS? Ive done my share of laundry loads over the years. It was actually my family chore growing up. Imagine, a young kid doing laundry for a family with eight kids. Thankfully, by the time there were eight kids, I was in college. But anyway, maybe that gave me an aversion to doing laundry because I dont do it anymore. I thank God that Cheryl did not develop the same aversion, despite having to also do the familys laundry growing up in her home. That was way way back when kids had chores. Anyway, so what the heck are laundry detergent pods? Whatever they are, they are killing children. No, not by snatching their souls while they sleep and replacing them with almost-perfect copies. They are causing poisoning, choking, and eye injuries because little kids are somehow getting a hold of them unattended. A new study in Pediatrics found that during 2012 and 2013, 17,000 laundry pod exposures were reported to poison control centers nationwide in children under six. 80% of these were ingestions, but some were inhalations, choking, or eye injuries. 4% of those exposed were hospitalized, and 7.5% suffered a moderate to major medical complication. Over 100 children had to be intubated and placed on a ventilator during their stay. Thankfully, there was only one fatality. So, despite my humorous reference to what is probably the best horror movie ever, this is no laughing matter. Will these be pulled from stores? I dont know. I still dont even know what it is. I bet my wife knows. Thing is, Im afraid to ask her because she might be like, Hey, let me show you. In fact, let me show YOU how to do the laundry! So, watch your kids. And dont let them do laundry - that might teach them the value of hard work. Besides, theres probably a laundry app or something that could just do it for them. And dont use pods. Use liquid, or powder, or whatever it is they are doing these days.
