DTP college of metallurgy opens in Kolhapur India is a dominant - TopicsExpress

DTP college of metallurgy opens in Kolhapur India is a dominant player globally in the metals industry but there is a tremendous shortage of trained personnel in metallurgical engineering. As an example it should be noted that while India is a second largest producer of castings in the world there is only one National Institute of Foundry and Forge Technology at Ranchi, Jharkhand Most of the engineers employed in the metal processing industry are not formally trained and exposed to best practices. The Indian economy will need to leverage the demographic dividend and grow the per capita metal consumption by at least four times to match the global average. The existing and new generation of engineers needs to understand that the Indian metals industry provides an excellent career path and employability comparable with other sectors. For this, the industry, education have to form partnerships to demonstrate the same. Maharashtra has a strong metal & foundry industry and Kolhapur is a major foundry cluster and provides several employment opportunities. After the successful and productive partnership of the IIF Kolhapur Chapter & the Government Polytechnic, Kolhapur for seven long years, both parties recognize each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Hence a comprehensive solution has been thought on a long term basis to set up a centre of excellence in foundry under the guidance of the IIT-Bombay at the Govt Polytechnic Campus, namely ‘Dhatu Tantra Prabhodhini’ (DTP). On November 14, 2013 at the Government Polytechnic, Kolhapur, and the IIF Kolhapur Chapter jointly organized an inauguration ceremony of DTP at the hands of Minister of State for Higher & Technical Education Rajesh Tope accompanied by Satej Patil, Minister of State Home & Rural Development, Hasan Mushrif, Minister Labour and Prataprao Pawar, Chairman, Sakal Media Group, Pune. After inaugurating the Prabodhini, Tope pledged an assistance of Rs 40 crore to Dhatu Tantra Prabodhini, a community college offering courses on metallurgy and the financial assistance would be delivered in four instalments -- Rs 10 crore each year. He told that DTP is the first of its kind of institute in the state set up in collaboration between the government and the foundry industry. The minister congratulated local industrialists and the IIF Kolhapur Chapter for joining hands with the state government for setting up of the institute. He appealed to all academics and industrialists to make the Prabodhini a world- class centre of foundry education. Ministers Satej Patil and Hasan Mushrif also extended their full support to the Prabodhini. In his speech, the IIF Chairman Surjitsing Pawar said that the Kolhapur Chapter has come forward for the governance of the Prabodhini and pledged industrial exposure to those studying in the institute. As many as 40 students have already been enrolled by several foundry industries from Kolhapur for the course. He added that the certification level is designed in a way that any foundry worker having education till Class IX can join the course and complete the degree course in seven levels. The vision of this Prabodhini is to create an environment of developing, adopting and disseminating world-class technologies in the field of foundry technology so as to help the Indian/Maharashtra foundry industry to reach towards perfection and earn a respectable image for it globally. In this ceremony, the Kolhapur Chapter felicitated the foundries who had signed and MoU for offering the support for the effective conduction of certificate programmes under community college. The function was well attended by a large number of industrialists, GPKP staff and students and various representatives from industrial associations, the IIT-Mumbai, colleges and educational institutes, etc. The function concluded with a vote of thanks by coordinator Shashank Mandre.
