DUI enforcement grant will result in more officers hunting for drunk drivers The Bellingham Police Department has received a grant from the Washington State Traffic Safety Commission to coordinate directed DUI patrols from October 1, 2014 through September 30, 2015. The stated goals for this project: ….” is to show a reduction rate in Fatality, Serious Injury Crashes, and all late hour crashes in Whatcom County and the City of Bellingham consistent with or higher than the Target Zero yearly goals. The Target Zero goals for Fatality and serious Injury crash reduction statewide are 24 less fatalities a year and 120 less Serious Injuries, this is a reduction rate of approximately 6%. The Goal of this proposal is to show this crash reduction rate for fatal and serious injury crashes and all late hour crashes at or above 6%. To facilitate this goal we will strive to increase our DUI arrest rate by over 50% for the city of Bellingham during the proposal year. This will be accomplished by striving to arrest 1 DUI offender per 4 hours of enforcement per officer as well as increased enforcement of the other top crash related behaviors.” As a kickoff for this grant, and in conjunction with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s office, Bellingham and Whatcom County Traffic officers will be conducting a high visibility DUI enforcement patrol on Friday October 3. This enforcement includes zero tolerance for underage drinking drivers. Officers will be focusing their enforcement on targeted City/County streets and roads which have the highest distribution of injury and fatal collisions within Whatcom County. Officers from the Bellingham Police department will continue this high visibility enforcement throughout the grant period with several directed DUI patrols per month. For additional information related to this enforcement effort please contact Traffic Sergeant Dennis James at 360-778-8683.
