DW STORY #83 – THE ANDROID INVASION [FOURTH DOCTOR]: The fourth story of the thirteenth season was a four-part adventure broadcast over four Saturdays from November 22nd to December 13th, 1975. PLOT: Landing somewhere outside London, the Doctor and Sarah Jane are surprised when they come across a town that just doesn’t make sense. The reason is that it’s not a real town, but a mock-up filled with androids (and it’s not even Earth!). There is an alien race (the Kraals) planning a conquest of Earth using androids and this is their test site on their home planet of Oseidon. Eventually the action moves to the real Earth where the Doctor must thwart the invasion – which he does. Also appearing in the show are former companion Harry Sullivan and U.N.I.T.’s Sergeant Benton. The show was to have also featured Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, but Nicholas Courtney was unavailable at the time. This was both Harry Sullivan’s and Sergeant Benton’s last appearance in Doctor Who. Many critics cite this story as the weak point in the season, but personally I have to disagree. I like the plot and the “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” feel. And as far as the not-so-good android effects go, they were no worse than the effects on The Six Million Dollar Man – another show I liked as a kid. So, overall, I’d recommend it. COMPANIONS IN THIS STORY: Sarah Jane Smith, Harry Sullivan (also: Sergeant Benton) Up next: “The Brain of Morbius” … ~ CL
