DW STORY #93 – THE INVISIBLE ENEMY [FOURTH DOCTOR]: The second story of the fifteenth season was a four-part adventure broadcast over four Saturdays from October 1st to October 22nd, 1977. PLOT: Answering a distress call, the Doctor and Leela land on Titan Base where they find that a strange space virus has infected the crew – soon the Doctor is infected as well. Everyone is transported to a nearby medical station for treatment by a Professor Marius, but given the nature of the virus, the only way the Doctor can combat it is to have himself and Leela cloned, shrunk down to a miniature size, and then inserted into his own body to track down the viral nucleus and destroy it. Although they are marginally successful, the virus escapes and is blown up to human-size when the clones are un-miniaturized. It flees back to Titan Base with the Doctor, Leela, and Professor Marius’s robot dog (K-9) in pursuit. Once on Titan Base, the Doctor is able to put a stop to the viral nucleus once and for all. At the end of the story, Professor Marius gives K-9 to the Doctor and the robotic dog becomes his newest companion. REMARKS: While the written version of this story isn’t bad, the realization of it on screen is horrible! If you watch this, you’ll see some of the show’s worst special effects ever – almost as if they only half-tried. It’s supposed to be an homage, of sorts, to “Fantastic Voyage” – but some moments of the show are just painful to watch. The show only has two claims to Doctor Who history: first, it introduces K-9; and second, it introduces a new TARDIS console room (replacing the wood-paneled one from the previous season). Other than that, I wouldn’t recommend this story to anyone – not even Whovians! COMPANIONS IN THIS STORY: Leela, K-9 Up next: “Image of the Fendahl” … ~ CL
