DWNHIGHLIGHTS: The management of the University of Ibadan (UI) on Friday formally took over the Otunba Tunwase National Paediatric Centre, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State. The centre, which was established on March 9, 2004, was donated to UI by the founder of First City Monument Bank, Chief Subomi Balogun, in June 2012. However, the formal handing over and signing of deed of ownership between UI and Balogun was done on Friday. Speaking at the signing ceremony, Balogun said he was donating the hospital to UI as part of his contribution to healthcare delivery in Nigeria. He urged the UI management to improve on the standard of the hospital and make it one of the best in the world. “I have seen so many children suffering due to the lack of adequate healthcare delivery and this was what prompted me to establish this hospital. “But today, I am delighted to handle it over as a total gift to you and I urge you to make it one of the best in the world. “ I don’t want it to be handled by sub-standard people and that is why I am donating it to UI management and I hope you will extend your services beyond children, even to other people in the community,” Balogun said. In his response, the Vice Chancellor of UI, Prof. Isaac Adewole, said the formal handing over of the hospital was significant in the history of the country. Adewole said the management was overjoyed to receive the gift and promised to improve the standard of the hospital. “We are all overjoyed because what has happened today is significant in the history of this country. “I have never heard of any Nigerian donating this kind of structure to a public enterprise. So, it is unique, unparalleled and unprecedented. And the only thing we can do is to pledge that we will continue to promote the idea for which the hospital was established, he said. Adewole said both local and international expertise would be used in the hospital to provide world class healthcare services. __ SL8.IT for Blackberry
