I was given the number 8. So here are 8 things you may not know about me: 1) I sometimes have pretty good reactions in emergencies and I love driving. 2) Once a guy in a truck pulling an open top trailer full of metal poles stopped short in traffic on Highway 26. The metal poles flew out the back onto the highway. Being behind him, I angled my truck at a safe distance with flashers on, got out in my nice work attire and Intel badge dangling around my neck, and wordlessly worked together with him to climb the metal poles back into the trailer. 3) One time on my drive home in the winter dark sitting at a light to take a left, I kind of noticed a bicyclist going down the street. By the time my light had changed while I turned, I saw a bright red flashing thing on the edge of the road. I pulled over, went back, and it was a bike light. So I did fast detective work in my head on likely routes, drove down a couple of dark roads and found the bicyclist stopped on a corner about a mile away and got him back his back bike light. 4) Once I was driving to my friends house in Beaverton for dinner on Highway 26 on a dark rainy evening and on a part of the highway where there is no shoulder, just a cement median, I suddenly saw a big black tire bouncing along the lane at 40mph. It must have fallen off of a vehicle. I knew that if it veered sideways across lanes in to traffic there would be a pileup - 50lbs with momentum bouncing down the freeway in the dark rain, it wouldnt be good. So I did calculations in my head. I slowed way down in my lane, which slowed down the people behind me. Then put on my flashers and sped way up very quickly passing the tire and stopped. I jumped out, ran around and threw open the back of the truck, and then turned just in time to brace myself in front of the speeding tire. With a whump I took the impact and then threw it up into the truck and got back in right before traffic caught up with me. I arrived to the dinner party with only a bruised shin! 5) One time when I lived on Mt Hood, I drove by a recently hit deceased dog on the side of the road. I got out, called the number on the tag of the poor boxer/pit pull, and this stereotypical looking redneck guy showed up minutes later; he was crying openly and cradling her head while we wrapped her in an old blanket and got her in his truck. 6) I carry a lot of random emergency things in my truck like old blankets, extra boots, toilet paper roll, bungie cords, bottled water, cliff bars, etc. even though I now live in the city. 7) Im thankful to have only ever accidentally hit a jackrabbit with my truck, although I came really close to hitting a doe who jumped out onto the road in Montana near Glacier National Park. 8) To this day, after years of driving, I still always say a quick silent prayer whenever I see an animal dead on the side of the road. I think I feel Im partly responsibly for the cementing of their habitat. Every single time, little prayers for gophers, skunks, cats, dogs, ravens, raccoons...
