Remark: the analysis contains, beyond related researches, the author´s depiction, which aims to invite its readers to a debate. All contributions to it are welcomed. The accuracy of a measure in time reckoning arose in the neolithic period. The first growers realised that , to achieve the success of a planting, it was necessary to have an exact sense of the beginning and ending of the seasons. And then, each culture developed its own system of time reckoning, having the astronomical phenomena as a base (or not exactly). The modern calendar is a solar one and it is based in the movement of the Earth around the sun. The ancient civilizations grounded their time reckoning under diverse circumstances: > The Ancient Egypt used the duration of a reign. > At the Roman Republic the succession of magistrates were used for it., > At the Ancient Greece the enumeration of generations. In 526 the catholic monk Dionysus Exiguus, “Dennis the Small”, decided to reckon the time as from the birth of Jesus Christ. He calculated that the birth of Christ had occurred in 753 AVC , on December 25th , and fixed the beginning of a “new era” on January 1st of the following year, the 754th of the foundation of Rome. The new chronological system wasn´t accepted immediately, not even for the Catholic Church. Finally admitted at the end of the century X d.C., it was gradually adopted by the Christian nations , as well as the Gregorian calendar. Due to the adoption of the Gregorian calendar and of the Christian Era for the majority of non-Christian nations as from the XIX d.C century, lots of savants prefer to use the term “Commom Era” instead of “Christian Era”. About the use of a.C. and d.C. Nowadays it is known that Dennis the Small made a little mistake on his reckoning: Actually, Jesus Christ was born a little before 749 AVC , four to eight years before the official “date”. Therefore, as a tradition, until nowadays the year 754 AVC is still considered as the “Year 1” of the Christian Era. The century (lat. saeculum, abbreviation saec.) embraces a period of 100 years and it is commonly represented by a roman numeral; as there wasn´t “year zero”, the last year of each century d.C. always ends in “00”, as well as the first year of each century a.C. The millennium embrances a period of 1000 and the first and the last year are calculated as it is done in a century. This way, the 2 nd millennium of the Christian Era ends on December 31st , 2000; the 3rd millennium started, therefore, on January 1st , 2001. And what does all of it have to do with the song “Year Zero”? A “catholic” monk created a time reckoning as from a supposed date when Jesus Christ would have been born, placing it as the beginning of a “New Era”. Even being wrong, his reckoning had an almost universal endorsement by the nations. And imposed to everyone. Those in command use the least fortunate ones, because they are to be given orders. And what religious institute still detain the power over the nations?
