Dad was adamant in creating a fire protection district for southeast Baton Rouge so much, that he started the St. George Volunteer Fire Department. He saw the need and stepped up to the plate. The Department still uses the artwork hand-drawn by a friend of one of the original firemen, featuring a St. George fireman dressed in firefighter gear on horseback holding a fire hose, looking downwards and extinguishing the fire directly from the dragons mouth. We were stunned, amazed and greatly moved by the Honor Guard presentation which the fire department did for dad. They had 4 firemen in the church during the 2-hour visitation from 11 am to 1 pm; every once in a while, they did a changing of the guard. It was very nice and thoughtful of them. But what just totally blew us away and that we were not expecting is the presentation at the cemetery entrance with the two enormous snorkel trucks. They placed the articulating booms together and a beautiful, large American flag was flown between the booms. The breeze was there to make the flag billow and wave just the right way. It was a wonderful sight and I know dad was smiling at that. The Air Force Honor Guard was present at the grave site and did a wonderful presentation of the flag and a long, toughing, thoughtful salute to mom.
